Born in Tel Aviv in 1967, Michael Ackerman spent his childhood and youth in New York where his family emigrated in 1974. He started photographing at age 18. In 1998 he was awarded the prestigious Infinity Award for Young Photographer by the International Center of Photography in New York.
In 1999, the publication of End Time City by Robert Delpire was a shock and a rare discovery of a talent of great intensity, his approach was new, radical and unique. Ackerman gave us his haloed vision of Varanasi: a dark and tormented wandering of a city where life is all the more exuberant as death inhabits it. This book, awarded with the Prix Nadar, was followed by the publication of Fiction in 2001 and Half life in 2010. In 2009, he received the SCAM Roger Pic Award for Departure, Poland.
In 2021, twenty years later, he published the new edition of End Time City, Ed. Xavier Barral, presenting a selection of his iconic photographs, enriched with many completely new images, taken during his recent trips to Varanasi, in 2018 and 2020.
All of Ackerman’s work explores time and timelessness, personal history and history of places, driven by an existential urgency that is both desperate and luminous, violent and tender. In black and white, with permanent risk that led him to explore impossible lighting, he allowed the grainy images to create enigmatic and pregnant visions. Decayed and damaged images, not as a matter of style but a direct analogue of experience, which is never pristine.
His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in all over the world and is part of many prestigious international collections. He currently lives in Berlin.
SMOKE
This book is a tribute to Benjamin, singer, poet and figure of the American underground, and to Cabbageton, an impoverished district of Atlanta. Designed like a scrapbook, it combines photographs by Michael Ackerman, pages of Benjamin’s notes and archive documents, with texts by Jem Cohen and Patti Smith. It reveals the infinite grace, urgency, delicacy and frenzy of a forgotten man and an era.
END TIME CITY
The first publication of End Time City listed Michael Ackerman as a major figure in photography. Twenty years later, this new edition, reimagined by the artist, presents a selection of his iconic photographs, enriched with many completely new images, taken during his recent trips to Benares, in 2018 and 2020.
Epilogue
‘Hunger – Epilogue’ is the first Ackerman’s publication since his acclaimed book ‘Half Life’ (Delpire, 2010). Featuring works from his debut project ‘End Time City’, to works that have never seen the light of day so far, ‘Epilogue’ is a recollection of Ackerman’s past and future universe. The text by Jem Cohen, Michael’s old friend, gives the reader an insider’s view of the artist’s work and personality.
The first edition of Hunger-Epilogue was published in 2019, the second, updated with new photographs and a new sequence, in 2020.
HALF LIFE
According to Denis Kambouchner’s introduction, Michael Ackerman’s latest book Half Life is a haunted book. In Michael Ackerman’s world, something is always disintegrating. A feeling of isolation pervades; a space weighed down by history takes over everything. The landscapes are harsh and unwelcoming, combining frozen expanses, blackened houses, vestiges of the mining industry and abandoned cemeteries. But it is the anguish of individuals that stirs us most deeply – their expressions of distress and confusion, their unfinished gestures, the sense of damage. These are people who appear to live in the ruins of a drama. It is as if their whole bodies were given over to a scream. What all these people, these bodies and these images, have in common is the pure situation, that something is wrong – out of joint.
FICTION
Fiction surprises us first by its desire to escape from all narration. The situations, beings and places are neither identified, nor are they located anywhere. Flashes of nights, fragments of intertwined fates, fleeting yet oppressive takes weave what Michael Ackerman defines as ‘a way of saying that is more mysterious than language.’
As the photographer himself wrote, ‘I try to avoid the traps of reality while at the same time maintaining ties to the real. Because these photos are encounters, not inventions. It’s not an aesthetic search. The fact that everything is haunted is not entirely deliberate. But for me, photography is inseparable from disappearance.’
END TIME CITY
“I had a completely raw, heartfelt, visceral engagement with the city. Almost every night that I spent in Benares I would go to sleep very, very desperate to wake up and have another chance to absorb what was there and connect with it. The city of Benares is an intense combination of fairy tale and nightmare. It is a very holy place to people and every day they come there by the hundreds, or thousands. It’s a never-ending pilgrimage. At the same time, it’s such a dark place where death is ever present. There’s just this poetic chaos to it, a beautiful urgency.” Michael Ackerman
While the title End Time City refers to the cremation grounds to which people travel from all over India for their final days, the book conveys the intense life and energy in this place of death. It is a deeply personal and dream-like interpretation of universal themes that are immensely urgent and relevant today.
